Origin of the Word “Yatara”

The word “yatara” is said to originate from a Gagaku (Japanese court music) term, “yatara-byōshi.” This refers to a fast-paced rhythm that is easy to lose, leading the word to describe something that lacks order or moderation.

However, “yatara” isn’t always used negatively. For instance, “yatara-jima” is a type of striped pattern with irregular colors and widths, giving it a stylish feel. There’s also a kind of pickle called “yatara-zuke,” which is made from various kinds of chopped vegetables. Thus, a Gagaku term gave birth to the names of a pickle and a kimono pattern.

Next is the world of haiku. We look forward to your participation, hoping that a variety of excellent verses will fly around.
